Electrifying Korea - The Wheeler Centre: Books, Writing, Ideas
I’ve seen this image before, but not somewhere i could tumblr it… before now.
It is a striking image, and it puts me in mind of a documentary i saw this onetime in which the happy citizens of Pyongyang were settling down for another night of sub-zero temperatures in unheated rooms, often without even the western imperialist indulgence of glass in the windows.
It was about young girls who spent their entire young lives rehearsing a gymnastics routine to impress Beloved Leader, with whom they were clearly infatuated. It was one of these girls that they showed putting on layer upon layer of medieval-style clothing and climbing beneath a ragtag collection of things that might have once been blankets on this freezing night.
In the end, of course, Beloved Leader was busy the day the girls put on their performance, the one they’d spent all their lives preparing for.
So they put it on for some minor party official instead, and that was it. Off to the factory.
I wish North Korea all the best in its aspirations to realise its national motto: Powerful and Prosperous Nation.
